Clara Alexandrovna Zamenhof , born Klara Silbernik (, Russian Клара Александровна Заменгоф , maiden name Russian Клара Зильберник ; born September 23, jul. / 5. October  1863 greg. In Kaunas , † 6. December 1924 in Warsaw ) was a Russian founding esperantistin .

Life

Klara Silbernik was the daughter of the soap factory owner Alexander (Sender Leibowitsch) Silbernik . In 1886 she met the ophthalmologist Ludwik Lejzer Zamenhof , whom she married in 1887.

Like her husband, Zamenhof wanted to create Esperanto as an international language. She gave her dowry of 10,000 rubles for the publication of the first Esperanto textbook Unua Libro in 1887. She was her husband's permanent assistant and secretary. After her husband's death in 1917, she continued to work for the worldwide spread of Esperanto. In 1921 she initiated the founding of the Warsaw Esperantist Society Konkordo . Since the first Esperanto World Congress in 1905, she has participated in the annual Esperanto World Congresses.

Zamenhof had three children: Adam (1888-1940, ophthalmologist, shot in AB action in Palmiry near Warsaw), Sofija (1889-1942, pediatrician , Treblinka ) and Lidija (1904-1942, lawyer , Treblinka).

Zamenhof's brother was the doctor Konstantin (Kadysch) Alexandrowitsch Silbernik (1853 or 1855–1920).
