List of apple varieties |
The white clear apple (short: clear apple ) is an old table fruit of the cultivated apple ( Malus domestica ). It is characterized by its unusually early maturity , which is reached by mid to late July.
fruit
The fruits are medium to large, 45 to 55 mm high and 58 to 73 mm wide and tend to be asymmetrical. The skin is thin and smooth and has a very uniform greenish-white color that turns into a whitish yellow as it ripens. The shell is spotted and lightly guarded. The pulp is white to light yellow in color, mildly sour and juicy. However, after harvesting, it quickly becomes floury and dry. The vitamin C content is mediocre. The stem cavity is medium-deep and often slightly rusted , the stem is long and thin. The calyx is also located in a deep cavity from which ribs extend that stretch across large parts of the fruit.
The tree blooms early to medium early and lasts a long time. The white clear apple is a summer apple ; the apples ripen in mid to late July. In some areas it is also known as the "Jacob apple" because the first fruits ripen on the feast day of St. James on July 25th.
The variety is good for applesauce and apple strudel , but also as a table apple . Since the apple is very sensitive to pressure and can only be stored for about two to three weeks, it is insignificant in commercial cultivation. Apple juice made from clear apples is rather unusual, but possible.
tree
The tree initially grows moderately. With the yield, which usually starts early, the growth weakens. The crown is medium in size and broadly spherical and requires a regular cut . The shoots should be kept short, as the eyes rarely sprout and there is a risk that only small fruits will grow. The variety is not suitable for small tree shapes.
Cultivation is also possible at higher altitudes. Various sources contradict each other as to whether the tree needs above-average nutrient-rich soil for a good yield. The variety is susceptible to blood lice and fruit tree cancer and there is a risk of powdery mildew in drought conditions . The wood is relatively hardy, but due to the early flowering time there is a certain risk of frost for the flowers.
The strain is diploid, making it a good pollen donor.
History and names
The clear apple comes from Riga ( Latvia ) from the Wagner nursery. In 1852 it was delivered to France and from there spread across Europe via the Leroy tree nursery. The variety has been recorded in Rhineland-Palatinate since 1844 and is still quite common today.
The clear apple is known by many names. Presumably due to a misunderstanding, it is also called Klara Apple . Since it is believed to have often fallen into fields that have not yet been harvested, the names corn apple , wheat apple , oat apple and corn apple are also known. Another interpretation of the name "corn apple" can be derived from the fact that ripening coincides with the beginning of the rye ("grain") harvest. The names Johannisapfel , Jakobiapfel , Augustapfel or Sommerscheibe indicate the early ripening of this variety. Jörgapfel is also a common name in the Hof area.
Similar varieties
The Transparent variety is very similar to the clear apple. Some sources name both white transparent and yellow transparent as a synonym for clear apple, others name yellow transparent as a separate variety.
