history

The Klaus Groth School was founded in February 1888 as a merger of two private girls' schools . However , it was only named after the local poet Klaus Groth with the nationalization in 1925.

One year after the first Abitur exams were taken at the school, the building in Parkstrasse, which is still in use today, was inaugurated in 1912. The headmaster from 1911 to 1937 was the then well-known pastor, racial theorist and historical author Wilhelm Erbt (1876-1944).

During the First World War , classes could be held despite severe impairments. In 1918, education in girls' schools was brought into line with that of boys. In 1927 the alumni association, which still exists today, was founded. During the National Socialist era in 1934, all female students were members of the Association of German Girls , which later had even more power than the teachers.

From 1940 the school suffered badly from the Second World War . Air raid drills, coal shortages and war relief services restricted teaching. On October 25, 1944, the gym was destroyed by an aerial bomb, and the main building was also badly damaged. Lessons were resumed half a year after the end of the war, and from 1949 on again in the renovated building on Parkstrasse.

From the 1970s onwards, boys were also admitted to the formerly all-girls school. In 1971/72 the school was expanded to include a new building and additional classrooms.

The gym was destroyed by arson in 1990.

Since 1991, the school offers bilingual of teaching. In 2001, the first school in Schleswig-Holstein was completely converted to the Abitur after twelve years (G8). In 2005 the Klaus Groth School became an open all-day school . Therefore a cafeteria was built and the new building was extended and renovated. The Villa Köster , which was previously reserved for the upper school, was no longer used in the 2007/2008 school year for structural reasons and was sold in 2011.

In addition, there has been a partnership with a boys 'and girls' school in Neumünster's twin town Gravesham in England for several years .

There is a bilingual offer in the subjects geography and biology. All classes since the 2001/2002 class have been taught using the G8 method, which means that instead of the nine years that are usual in Schleswig-Holstein at high school, only eight are required. In addition, the school was awarded the scientific quality seal of the Association of Mathematical and Scientific Excellence Centers in Schools (MINT-EC).

In the language area, the KGS supports interested and talented schoolchildren through bilingual lessons (language: English) in the subjects of biology and geography as well as the optional languages Spanish and Italian (from grade 8). In the upper level, the additional language support is geared towards taking up a degree abroad or a language-oriented higher education and offers courses to obtain the language certificates CEA (Cambridge English: Advanced) and DELF (Diplôme d'Etudes en langue française) as well as the opportunity of relearning Spanish also from grade 10.
