After the end of the first half of this season, Engels moved to the top division SC Einheit Dresden in January 1962. There he played 13 league point games by the end of the season. The SC unit ended the season as relegated, so that Engels then had to compete in the second-rate I. GDR league . This season Klaus Engels was the top scorer in the GDR League South Season for Unity Dresden with 16 goals. In 1964/65 Dynamo Dresden had again difficulties to keep as a climber in the league. After the team was in absolute danger of relegation six match days before the end of the season and the unit had no prospect of promotion, Engels was delegated to SG Dynamo Dresden together with his teammate Klaus Sammer . There he was used in four league points games of the current season, and Dynamo still managed to stay up.

In the subsequent league season, Engels fought his left half-forward with 25 out of 26 possible point games a regular place in the dynamo team and was her most successful shooter with eight goals. Engels kept his regular place in the 1966/67 season with 22 appearances. The 29-year-old played his last league season in 1967/68, he was only used sporadically in nine point games. This season saw Dynamo Dresden again as relegated. In the following GDR league season 1968/69 Engels played only one point game, after which he ended his career as a competitive athlete.
