Klaus Hartmann (1996)

Klaus Hartmann (born July 5, 1929 in Cologne-Lindenthal ; † December 3, 2019 in Cologne ) was on the board of Kaufhof AG for seventeen years and the sixth president of 1. FC Köln from 1991 to 1997 . The Hartmann era as club president stands for economic consolidation with a simultaneous sporting decline.

Klaus Hartmann was soccer goalkeeper in the A-youth of SpVgg Sülz 07, one of the two predecessor clubs of 1. FC Cologne. Later he switched to field handball due to an eye disease and rose with FC to the Oberliga West, the top German division at the time. In 1952, when he was selected by the University of Cologne, he became a German university champion.

After graduating from high school in Kreuzgasse in 1949 , Hartmann began studying business administration in Cologne , which he completed in 1952 with a degree in business administration. After working for the Ford works in Cologne and a Dutch trust company, Hartmann started as an auditor at Kaufhof AG in 1957 , where he became director in 1970, deputy member of the board in 1975 and, in 1977, a full board member for IT, logistics, planning and personnel from 1981. In 1991 Hartmann retired after working for Kaufhof for more than 34 years.

In 1967 he was brought on board by FC President Franz Kremer as an assessor and auditor and in 1969 he was elected to the sports advisory board. Under President Peter Weiand , Hartmann was vice-president and treasurer of the association for eight years. On the verge of retirement, he was elected club president on November 21, 1991.

Hartmann took over a financially troubled top Bundesliga club from his predecessor Dietmar Artzinger-Bolten in 1991 and in 1997 handed over an economically somewhat healthy relegation candidate to his successor Albert Caspers . He was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class .

Hartmann was married and the father of two children. He was buried on December 12, 2019 in the Melaten Central Cemetery in Cologne .
