Klaus Röhrborn

Klaus Röhrborn (born January 10, 1938 in Dippoldiswalde , Saxony ) is a German orientalist and Turkologist .

life and work

Klaus Röhrborn studied philosophy and oriental studies for four semesters at the University of Leipzig and from 1958 philosophy, Islamic studies, Turkish studies and politics at the University of Hamburg . Here he attended lectures by Bertold Spuler , Wolfgang Lentz and Annemarie von Gabain, among others .

In the same year for Dr. phil. after receiving his doctorate , he worked as a research assistant to Ewald Wagner at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen . There he completed his habilitation in 1971 for the subjects of Islamic and Turkish Studies. In 1972 he was appointed Professor of Islamic Studies and Turkology at the University of Giessen. In 1992, Klaus Röhrborn was appointed professor of Turkish studies at the Georg-August University in Göttingen (successor to Gerhard Doerfer ). His main research interests are Old Turkish - the “Uyghur Dictionary” he published from 1977 should be mentioned here - as well as the language reform of the Turkish language . Since 1986 he has headed the DFG project "Xuanzang's Life and Work", as a result of which 10 publications have so far appeared in the publications of the Societas Uralo-Altaica (VdSUA). From 1979 to 1994, Klaus Röhrborn was managing director of Societas Uralo Altaica and has been one of its vice-presidents since 1994. He is co-editor of the Ural-Altai Yearbooks (UAJb), the VdSUA and the communications of the SUA . In 2012, Klaus Röhrborn was made an honorary member of the SUA.

His work for the old Turkish catalog volumes within the academy's program “Cataloging of Oriental Manuscripts in Germany (KOHD)” should also be emphasized. Since 1996 he has been a full member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen .

In 2003 Röhrborn retired . His successor (since 2008) is Jens Peter Laut .
