Small broad-nosed bats ( Scotorepens ) are a bat genus within the smooth-nosed family with four species that occur in the Australis biogeographical region . Before the creation of the new genus, the species were counted among the American noctule bats ( Nycticeius ).

According to Mammal Species of the World (2005) and the World Conservation Union (IUCN), the genus contains the following species:

Small broad-nosed bats reach a head-trunk length of 37 to 65 mm and a tail length of 25 to 42 mm. They weigh 6 to 18 g. The fur has a brown, gray-brown or olive-brown color on the back, the belly is usually lighter. The species resemble the American noctule bat in their physique and like them have an approximately square snout and only one upper incisor in each half of the jaw. In contrast, the third upper molar is only rudimentary in them.

These bats live in different habitats , but need ponds or other watering holes in the area. During the day they rest in tree hollows or buildings and form smaller colonies there . At night they hunt flying insects . Males and females mate before the Australian winter, after seven months of gestation one or two cubs are born. These cling to the mother's fur for the first 10 days and later stay in hiding when the older animals hunt. After about five weeks they can fly by themselves.

The World Conservation Union lists all species as "not endangered" ( Least Concern ).
