The Small Guild ( Latvian Mazā Ģilde ), also St. John's Gilde or Stube zu Soest , is a listed building in the Latvian capital Riga . It is used as a culture and event center.

It is located in Riga's old town on the south side of Gildstubenstrasse ( Amatu iela ) in a corner at the confluence with Meisterstrasse ( Meistaru iela ) at Gildstubenstrasse 3, 5. A little further north is the Great Guild , and south is the building complex, which is also listed Meisterstrasse 19, 21, 23 .

Architecture and history

The Small Guild was the amalgamation of the craftsmen's guilds in Rigas, in which German craftsmen were bound together. For a long time Latvian craftsmen were not allowed to join this guild. The Small Guild existed as an organization from 1352 to 1936, then it was replaced by the newly founded Chamber of Crafts.

In the period from 1864 to 1866, the splendidly designed building of the small guild, directly opposite the house of the merchants, was erected at the traditional location of the guild. The city ​​architect Johann Daniel Felsko was the architect of the house, which was built in the neo-Gothic style . The interior of the house, which is based on the late English Gothic, is extremely splendid and representative.

Particularly noteworthy are the magnificent ballroom of the house, as well as glass paintings and various furnishings reminiscent of the time of the guilds. The vestibule is octagonal and contains four painted views of Livonia : Treyden , Neuhausen , Wenden and Kokenhusen . In addition to the historic assembly hall of the offices, there is also the hall of the elder bench in the house. Two stone Roman warriors in the stairwell originally served as decorations for the sand gate of the Riga city fortifications . The elders of the Small Guild are immortalized in oil portraits from 1616 onwards. Stained glass in the seven windows of the upper hall refer to the 30 offices (as of 1918). In the past, the Johanniskeller restaurant was located in the cellar of the house .

Since October 29, 1998, the Small Guild has been registered together with the Big Guild as a complex under number 6534 in the Latvian Monument Register. In 1999 and 2000 the Small Guild was restored. The floors of the vestibule, ballroom and stairs are covered with Terraco mosaics. The colored windows were made in Hanover . The wooden frames of windows and doors are decorated with sayings.

On March 27, 2010, the Latvian party Par prezidentālu republiku was founded in the Small Guild .
