The little bark robber ( Phloeonomus pusillus ) is a beetle from the family of the short-winged birds (Staphylinidae).

features

The beetles reach a body length of 1.7 to 2 millimeters and have a strongly flattened body. They are brown-black in color, the antennae tips and usually the head are a little darker. The pronotum has its widest point in the middle and has two elongated impressions on both sides of the middle. The abdomen is finely structured in dots, but this structure is covered by an equally fine sculpture. The similar Phloeonomus punctipennis can be distinguished by its reddish-yellow antennae and the larger impressions on the pronotum and a stronger puncture on the abdomen.

Occurrence and way of life

The species is distributed holarctic and occurs all over Europe, also in the far north and on the British Isles . The animals are mainly found under the bark of conifers, especially if the trees are infested with bark beetles, and less often under the bark of deciduous trees such as birches and oaks . They are very common and often occur in groups. They predatorily feed on bark beetles.
