The small disk bellies ( Liparis montagui ) is a species of fish from the family of the disk bellies (Liparidae). It occurs in the northeastern Atlantic around the British Isles , on the coasts of the North Sea and on the coast of Norway , in the southwestern Barents Sea , near Bear Island , near Svalbard and on the south coast of Iceland . In contrast to its close relative, the great disc belly , it is absent in the Baltic Sea .

features

The small disc belly becomes 10 to 12 cm long. The fish are tadpole-shaped with a large head and a pointed body. Like all disc bellies, it has the characteristic suction disc formed from the pelvic fins. In contrast to the large disc belly, the long dorsal fin never overlaps the just ending caudal fin. The anal fin overlaps the caudal fin base in rare cases. Small disc bellies are brownish in color and show no pattern.

Way of life

The small disc belly lives in the extremely shallow water down to depths of 30 meters and often hangs under stones or attaches itself to seaweed or seaweed with its suction disc. It feeds primarily on crustaceans , including fleas , shrimp and small crabs. The fish multiply in the winter months and spawn in the Wadden Sea .
