Cleophon painter
The Kleophon Painter is a painter of the Attic - red-figure style. He worked in the second half of the 5th century BC. He received his emergency name because of the Kalos name he used, Kleophon on the Stamnos St. Petersburg, Hermitage B 2353.
The Kleophon painter was a student of the vase painter Polygnotos . His work is simple and serious, even if he is not the best artist. His figures are fleshy and full, his heads look beautiful and sublime. He mainly paints larger vessel shapes, trying different shapes. The depiction of Komos scenes, which actually belong to the archaic period, is particularly characteristic of him . One of his best known works on a volute crater from Spina shows an Apollonian sacrificial procession. It is reminiscent of the frieze of the Parthenon that was created around the same time . On a Loutrophoros depicting warriors in a cemetery, he used a larger amount of opaque white, which was rather unusual at the time. The dinosaur painter is in the direct tradition of the Kleophon painter.
The black-figure Panathenaic price amphoras of the Robinson group are also attributed to the Kleophon painter and his circle .
