The Clinic for Cardiac Surgery Karlsruhe is a specialist clinic for the treatment of heart diseases in Karlsruhe . The sponsor is the HELIOS Kliniken (until 2013 to the Aktiengesellschaft Rhön-Klinikum ).

history

The clinic was built on the basis of an agreement between the city of Karlsruhe and Rhön-Klinikum AG in 1991 in the vicinity of the Karlsruhe city clinic . The aim was to improve the undersupply of cardiac surgery in the Karlsruhe region at the time. The Clinic for Cardiac Surgery was inaugurated on September 15, 1995 with initially 65 beds and opened in October of that year.

After several renovations, the house with 89 beds has had five operating theaters since 2009 , including one hybrid operating room . Around 2,500 heart operations are performed every year. About 300 people are employed. Ulrike Vogt is the managing director, and Uwe Mehlhorn is the medical director.

The Clinic for Cardiac Surgery cooperates with the cardiological departments of the Municipal Clinic and the St. Vincentius Clinic in Karlsruhe.

Homophobic and transphobic incident April 2020

In April 2020, a senior doctor at the clinic wrote on his private Twitter account, “As a doctor, I would like to mention that homosexuality and transsexuality are diseases.” ( “Bir hekim olarak Eşcinselliğin, transsexuelliğin hastalık olduğunu belirtmek isterim.” ) After complaints from the public and the group of colleagues, the doctor was initially on leave. On May 13, 2020, the clinic's collaboration with the doctor was terminated with immediate effect and the reason was referred to the "Helios Code of Compliance".
