life and work

After graduating from high school and training as a teacher, Klodin Erb studied fine arts at the Zurich Higher School of Design from 1989 to 1993 . After trying out various media, such as textile work and photography, she turned to painting in 2004, initially based on models from pop culture . Starting in 2007, she expanded the range of motifs, choosing other classic genres, generous formats and a more differentiated visual language. She deals with the tradition of painting playfully, seriously and thoughtfully at the same time, breaking taboos and applying content from art history and everyday culture equally. With the painting she reflects on her environment, thoughts and emotions.

Since 2007, Erb has been taking up the relevance of the interior, which has been lost in the modern era, as a pictorial motif, cautiously in the choice of the motif, the style used, the lines and the coloring, so browns are preferred over bright, strong colors. Empty living rooms with colored furniture and pieces of clothing are intended to reflect the middle-class milieu of the 19th century, people are only present as traces in the form of material objects. She tries to evoke associations such as vulnerability, beauty, innocence and danger through the perception and empathy of the active viewer.

Klodin Erb deals with self-referentiality by using classic genres, styles and motifs . In her visual and art theoretical works, she reflects on painting itself and thus depicts it as an object of art. With the visualization of brush movements or roughly figurative representation, she addresses painting itself. Her works are full of allusions to art history, but that is how they appear never old-fashioned, which is partly due to the dynamism and the transparent application of paint, which always convey freshness and lightness.

The style of the New Wild at the beginning of the 1980s can be recognized in the gestural painting style and the lively, violent brushstrokes. Klodin Erb thus joins the tradition of figuration . Shapes are reduced and realistic, classic motifs such as furniture, still lifes and portraits are represented by an emphatic alternation between representational and non-representational. The fleeting application of the coloring increases the feeling of dissolution. Colors interlock and only allow unclear shapes to be perceived as patterns. Erb is less concerned with the clear reproduction of the details, but rather with the creation of moods in the viewer.

In the ongoing process of analyzing, questioning and reinterpreting, Erb reveals a search for irritating, disturbing and fragmentary motifs. With one of her most important works, Beste Freundinnen , she unites the different characteristics of her painting. Figures and objects are also reduced to the essentials and appear unfinished. A critical and playful look at the same time is combined with a deliberately unsightly expression that deliberately avoids the classic rules of beautiful painting. The bodies are fragmented, not perfect, and emphasize their vulnerability and fragility, thus making them appear human.

With her works, Erb moves in the field of tension between the past and the present, searching for a contemporary design language. In doing so, she cites pictorial genres such as the still life of the Baroque and the bourgeois interior of the 19th century. With dynamism, brushstrokes and application of paint, she brings lightness and freshness to the motif in order to make these types of images look new again in today's media age and social restlessness, with painterly imperfections and irritations in content that stimulate suspenseful reflection. She strives to bring topicality and timelessness together in her paintings.

In addition to her individual practice, Erb regularly works with other artists, for example with Eliane Rutishauser for the Baby project or is the Fischli Weiss ? . From 2000 to 2008 Erb was active in the artists' group with .
