John S. Kloppenborg

John Seargeant Kloppenborg (born June 17, 1951 ) is a Canadian religious scholar and university professor who has also written numerous books and theological articles as an author. His focus is on New Testament studies. Kloppenborg is Chair of the Department and Center for Religious Studies at the University of Toronto and a member of the Context Group .

His work includes researching the origins and sources of early Christian scriptures, including the logial source Q , which is believed to be one of the earliest written collections of the teachings of Jesus. Kloppenborg has also written and taught about the different versions of the proto-biblical texts and the meaning and use of the specific parables of Jesus .

Kloppenborg received his Masters in 1977 and his Ph.D. in 1984 in Toronto ( Ontario ) from the University of St. Michael's College (a constituent college of the University of Toronto). From 1977 to 1979 he was a lecturer in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Toronto, then in the same role as a lecturer from 1983 to 1984 at the Faculty of Theology at the University of St. Michael's College. This was followed by work as an Associate Professor at various universities, from 1988 to 2001 at the Faculty of Theology de University of St. Michael's College, and later at the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Windsor. He has taught and researched in Toronto, Windsor, Great Britain, Helsinki , Jerusalem , Cambridge, Calgary and the USA in Claremont , California.

Kloppenborg is one of the general editors of the International Q Project (IQP). Kloppenborg takes part in the increasing, scientific interest in research on the logial source Q. In European research, the source Q is mainly interpreted from prophetic-apocalyptic assumptions, as is suggested by Rudolf Steck , Paul Hoffmann , Migaku Sato in North American research the wisdom character emphasizes James M. Robinson and Kloppenborg or even postulates a closeness to cynicism , such as Burton L. Mack , Leif E. Vaage .
