On the Edge of Democracy (original title in Portuguese Democracia em Vertigem ; English The Edge of Democracy ) is a Brazilian documentary by Petra Costa about the social and political developments of the past thirty years and the current situation in Brazil .
The film, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2019, was released on Netflix in June 2019 .

The film begins with the history of Brazil in the 20th century and uses the example of the parents' generation and family of Petra Costa to tell the social and political division in Brazil, which has persisted to the present day due to the corruption that has always existed in Brazil .
It deals with the political rise of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva , the term of office of his successor Dilma Rousseff , her successor Michel Temer and the politician Jair Bolsonaro .

On the verge of democracy received mostly positive reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes , the film received an approval rating of 95 percent based on 20 reviews . On Metacritic , the film documentation received an average of 81 out of 100 points with 12 ratings.
AO Scott of the New York Times praised the film as "a chronicle of civil betrayal, abuse of power and grief". Leslie Felperin wrote in The Guardian : "Costa manages to create an intimate primer on the decline of the state into populism and the fraying of the country's democratic fabric." David Ehrlich of IndieWire described the film as "angry, intimate and haunting Portrait of Brazil's recent relapse into the open jaws of dictatorship ”.
