The Agarak monastery ( Armenian Ագարակի վանք ) was a monastery of the Armenian Apostolic Church founded in early Christian times in what is now the eastern Turkish province of Iĝdir south of Digor . At least until 1920, the ruins of a possibly dating from the 5th or 6th century were church hall , a mid-7th century created a centralized structure with four conches and a relief Tele received.

Word formation

Agarak Monastery was named after the settlement in which it was built. The name Agarak is a historical name of the settlement Egrek in the Iĝdir province in today's Turkey . Agarak ( Western Armenian Ագարակ) stands for “homestead” in Armenian.

history

Agarak was located in Jakatk District , a province of historic Armenia , Ayrarat . In the years 1918–1920 it was attached to the Surmari District (acronym of the words Surp Mariam - Saint Mary) of the Republic of Armenia from 1920 . After 1920 the buildings were completely destroyed.

Monastery complex

The Agarak monastery had numerous finely carved khachkars (cross stones). The main church Surb Stephanos (Armenian Սուրբ Ստեփանոս, Sankt Stephanus) was a pentagonal coated Tetrakonchos with an inside circular and outside octagonal drum with dome. Many architectural fragments have been found around the churches, including the remains of a late medieval stele with a statue of a woman holding a model of a basilica in her hands.
