Arbore Monastery

The Arbore Monastery is located in Romania near the city of Solca on the territory of the Arbore municipality , about 25 km (as the crow flies) west-northwest of the district capital Suceava . The monastery church Tăierea Capului Sfântului Ioan Botezătorul ("The Heads of St. John the Baptist") was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1993 together with other churches in Moldova .

history

Luca Arbore , a general of Stephen the Great , had the monastery built in 1503. The small rectangular abbey church does not have a typical high dome. The mostly green frescoes were made in 1541 by a group of artists around the master Dragoș Coman from Iași . The best preserved frescoes are on the south and west sides. Luca Arbore and his wife Iuliana were buried in the church after their death. In the years from 1909 and 1936 the monastery was restored. There is an ethnographic museum in the monastery .
