The probota monastery is located in Probota , near the town Dolhasca in Romania . The monastery church Sf Nicolae ("Saint Nicholas") was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1993, together with other churches in Moldova .

history

Already before 1398 a wooden monastery with the name “Sankt Nikolaus von der Au” was built in Probota. It was probably a foundation by Roman I. Musat (1391-1394) or Ștefan I. (1394-1399). On the banks of the Somuz, Stephan the Great built a stone church with three aspen. It is believed that the church was destroyed in a flood. Prince Petru Rareș , a son of Stefan the Great, had the third monastery built in Probota in 1530. Petru Rareş and his wife and his son Ștefan Rareş were later buried on the left side in the crypt of the monastery church. The interior and exterior paintings made between 1532 and 1536 were restored between 1996 and 2000. In 1550 the monastery wall, up to six meters high, with defensive towers and battlements was built. In the church there are 21 valuable tombstones that were created between 1464 and 1640.
