The monastery was founded around 1360 by the voivod Bogdan I and was the burial place of the Moldovan voivodes up to Alexandru cel Bun . His church Sf. Nicolae is considered to be the oldest still existing religious building in the Vltava. The system is listed under the number SV-II-mA-05603.

Buildings and plant

In the church, the first stone church building on the Vltava, a basilica that is a synthesis of Romanesque, Gothic and Byzantine elements, there is also the necropolis of the princes of the Vltava with ten princely graves. The church has smooth outer walls with a frieze under the eaves. It was preceded by a wooden structure that has been archaeologically proven. According to Vătășianu, the original structure of the church shows Cistercian influences (Clairvaux II).

Furnishing

Votive painting in the church

The painting of the church from the 14th century was renewed in 1558 under Prince Alexandru Lăpuşneanu ; at about the same time the exonarthex with a stepped vault and a dome was added. Around 1880 the painter Epaminonda Bucevschi repainted it in tempera technique .
