The monastery of Sfântul Ioan cel Nou ( Saint John the New (Martyr) ) is located in Suceava , Romania . The monastery church Sf. Gheorghe ("Saint George") was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1993 along with other churches in Moldova .

history

The monastery was built by Prince Bogdan III. cel Orb , the son of Stefan the Great , donated in 1514 and completed in 1522 under Prince Ștefăniță Voda . The interior and exterior paintings were commissioned by Prince Petru Rareș (1532–1534).

The monastery is named after St. John Trebizond, who died a martyr's death in 1303 in Cetatea Albă . Its bones were brought to Suceava in 1402 by Prince Alexander the Good . The bones are in a silver coffin, which is located under a canopy built in 1783.
