The Chassagne (Cassiana) monastery is a former Cistercian monk abbey in France . It is located in the commune of Crans in the Ain department of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region , around 29 km south of Bourg-en-Bresse on the Toison stream.
history
The "Mas de Chassagne" was given by the lord of Villars, Etienne, to the monastery of Saint-Sulpice in 1145 , which first built a grangie there, which was elevated to an abbey in 1162 and furnished by the von Villars family. The monastery itself had a grangie in Martinaz and the port of Port-de-Loyes on the river Ain . During the French Revolution , the monastery was closed in 1791.
buildings
The monastery mill and the guest wing from the 18th century have been preserved. Remains of the St. Catherine Chapel from the 14th century still exist. In dry periods, the foundations of the abbey church with its square choir can be seen in the nearby cemetery.
