history

A wealthy goldsmith donated the Cistercian convent Notre-Dame de Clairmarais (Latin: Clarus mariscus "enlightened swamp") in front of the then gates of Reims in 1222 , which was settled in 1244 by the Cistercian abbey of Les Rosiers . In 1363 or 1396 the sisters moved to the city center, but were replaced there in 1462 by monks, whose priory was subordinated to the Clairvaux monastery in 1473 and existed until it was dissolved by the French Revolution . In Reims, the Clairmarais district is reminiscent of the former monastery.
