The Faise (Faisia) monastery is a former Cistercian abbey in the Gironde department , Nouvelle-Aquitaine region , in France . It is located in the municipality of Les Artigues-de-Lussac on the banks of the stream in a narrow valley around ten kilometers northeast of Libourne .

history

The monastery was founded in 1137 at the instigation of the Viscount de Castillon Pierre II and was occupied by monks from the Cadouin Abbey . Thus it belonged to the filiation of the Primary Abbey of Pontigny . The monastery suffered first in the Hundred Years War and later in the Wars of Religion . In 1310 it had to be rebuilt. It fell in Coming in 1463 , two commendati abbots came from the Montesquieu family, namely the uncle and a brother of the philosopher Charles de Secondat . During the French Revolution the monastery was dissolved in 1790 and then fell into disrepair.

Buildings and plant

Buildings like the abbot's palace from the 16th and 18th centuries around a courtyard with two superimposed galleries have been preserved. Little traces of the Romanesque church have survived. Part of the library has found its way into the Libourne municipal library. The church of Artigues-de-Lussac received a few pieces of equipment, a bell from 1624 the church of Petit-Palais.
