history
The monastery was founded and settled by the landowner Gercke Harkema from Klaarkamp monastery around 1240. It was subordinate to the mother monastery Klaarkamp. The monastery took part in the diking of the Lauwers . From granges villages Visvliet, Pieterzijl and Munnekezijl emerged. It was involved in the Peace of Groningen between the Schieringers and the Vetkopers in 1422 . The dike in the Kruislande was carried out in cooperation with the Aduard Monastery . The monastery went under when Friesland adopted the Reformed Confession in 1580. The monastery was then demolished except for the brewery, which was used as a church in 1629.
