The Gondon Monastery (Gondom; Gondonium) is a former Cistercian abbey in the municipality of Monbahus in the Lot-et-Garonne department , Nouvelle-Aquitaine region , in France , around 21 kilometers northwest of Villeneuve-sur-Lot .

history

The monastery was possibly founded by Géraud de Salles as a subsidiary of the Cadouin Abbey ; others consider the year 1123 and a foundation by the Lords of Lauzun to be more likely. It thus belonged to the filiation of the Primary Abbey of Pontigny . In 1147 a subsidiary was founded, the Fontguilhem Monastery . The initially influential monastery, which produced a famous wine, was weakened by the clashes with England, the coming and the religious wars of the 16th century. It was disbanded in 1791 during the French Revolution .

Buildings and plant

Remains of the monastery have been preserved in an agricultural property, including a pigeon house .
