The Fontguilhem Monastery (Fons Guillelmi or Fundus Guillelmi) is a former Cistercian abbey in the municipality of Masseilles in the Gironde department , Nouvelle-Aquitaine region , in France , around 15 km east of Bazas im Bazadais (cf. Rivet Monastery ).
history
The monastery was built in 1124 under Abbot Bernard de Ségur by Wilhelm IX. Land made available by Aquitaine was founded as a subsidiary of Gondon Monastery . It is said to have joined the Cistercian order in 1147 and thus belonged to the filiation of the Pontigny Primary Abbey . The monastery had the granges Artiguevieille, Aiguebelle and Belloc and a mill in Marion on the banks of Barthos . In the Middle Ages , the monastery fell into Kommende . It was renewed in the 17th and 18th centuries. Charles de Secondat was one of the last commendatars . During the French Revolution , the monastery was closed around 1790. After the revolution, the monastery was used as a quarry.
Buildings and plant
A building from the 17th century (earlier probably the abbot's house) with a stone staircase and some remains from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance have been preserved from the monastery . Parts of the complex are classified as Monument historique .
