The Abbey Rivet (lat. Abbatia Sanctae Mariae de Riveto ; French. Le Rivet , Abbaye Sainte-Marie du Rivet ) is now a Trappist - abbey in Auros , a French commune in the Gironde department in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . The monastery is located around eight kilometers southeast of Langon .
history
The monastery is a Benedictine foundation from the 9th century, which joined the Cistercian order in 1189 as the daughter of Pontaut Monastery from the affiliation of the Pontigny Primary Abbey . It owned u. a. the Repassat mill. In the Wars of Religion , the abbey was sacked in 1572 and 1593. The monastery fell into the coming years in 1702 . It came to an end during the French Revolution in 1791. In 1885 it came to the Tamize family who tried to restore it. In 1938, Trappist women ( Cistercian women from the strict observance, OCSO), who had to give up their previous location in Blagnac due to the airport construction, settled in buildings that were partly built in 1939.
Buildings and plant
The nave of the monastery church from the 14th century and the cloister have been preserved. The choir stalls found their way into the church of Auros, the main altar into the cathedral of Bazas .
