The Haute-Fontaine Abbey (Altus Fons, Hautefontaine) is a former Cistercian abbey in the commune of Ambrières in the Marne department , Grand Est region , in France . It is about twelve kilometers west of Saint-Dizier .

history

The monastery was founded in 1136 on an area donated by Isembard von Vitry above the Marne and settled from the Trois-Fontaines monastery . The first abbot was Raoul. So it belonged to the filiation of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . Isembard von Vitry left the monastery with further goods between Landricourt and Sainte-Livière and in Bonnevais in 1141. In 1219 the monastery acquired the tithe of Arrigny and in 1250 land in Ambrières. The monastery, which is located near a major road, was considered a hospital for monks in need of relaxation and never saw any major development. It was in 1544 under attack by the troops of Emperor Charles V to suffer. In 1547 it fell into the future . The first Commendarabbot, Jean de Montluc, had fortifications built in 1552. In the 17th century, Haute-Fontaine became a very active center of Jansenism under the abbot Guillaume le Roy (1653–1684) and printed various works with the indication "Imprimé en Hollande". Since 1670 the monastery complex was rebuilt next to the existing church. During the French Revolution, the monastery, which was still inhabited by eight monks, was dissolved in 1791 and the buildings gradually fell into disrepair, but were still inhabited until 1940. The decline continued in the 1950s and 1960s, despite being included in the supplementary list of the Monuments historiques .

Buildings and plant

A yoke has been preserved from the 12th century church, which was demolished in 1840. The cloister in the south of the nave with the monastery buildings, which was newly built in the 17th century, is in decline. The rest of the west wing, located under a terrace, includes vaulted buildings from the 12th and 13th centuries.
