Klein-Mariazell Monastery

The monastery Kleinmariazell was originally a pin of the Benedictines in the monastic settlement Kleinmariazell in the market town of Altenmarkt an der Triesting in Lower Austria . After the monastery was closed in 1782 and the former monastery building was largely demolished in 1964, the monastic tradition was resumed in the 2000s with the construction of a new monastery building after a break of more than 200 years. The remains of the former monastery building are under monument protection .

history

Under the Babenberg Margrave Leopold III. the saint (1073–1136), Klosterneuburg Abbey (1108), Heiligenkreuz Abbey (1133) and Klein-Mariazell Abbey (1136) were founded. The foundation building of the Stiftskirche Basilica Klein-Mariazell was a nave with a square choir and a north aisle with a round apse and was expanded at the end of the 12th / beginning of the 13th century to the type of a three-aisled basilica with a transept, square choir and three apids.

Due to its marginal geographical location and its difficult economic situation and repeated destruction and crises, the monastery achieved relatively little importance. From the 18th century, the pilgrimage route from Vienna to the Basilica of Mariazell in Styria led mainly via the Heiligenkreuz Abbey and the Triestingtal via Lilienfeld and Annaberg to Mariazell and, more rarely, through the Klein-Mariazeller Seitental. The monastery reached a final boom under Abbot Jacob Pach (1752–1782), who transformed the collegiate church into baroque style, and ended in 1782 with the abolition of the monastery under Emperor Joseph II.

After the abolition of the monastery, important properties such as vineyards near Mödling, Sooss, Baden and Pfaffstätten were sold in 1794. In 1825 the monastery was auctioned and then used as a castle. From 1940 it served as a resettlement camp, and in 1964 the former monastery building was largely demolished due to its disrepair.

At the beginning of the 2000s, the resettlement took place by the Order of the Brothers Samaritans of the Flame of Love of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (FLUHM), which was founded in 1982 and has been based in the Archdiocese of Vienna since 2003 . On September 8, 2004, the foundation stone for the construction of a new monastery building with six residential units was laid by Episcopal Vicar P. Amadeus Hörschläger, and on September 25, 2005 Cardinal Christoph Schönborn gave the solemn blessing.
