Kovilj Monastery
The Kovilj Monastery (Serbian: Манастир Ковиљ, Manastir Kovilj ) is a monastery of the Serbian Orthodox Church . The plant is located in the village of Kovilj near Novi Sad in the autonomous province of Vojvodina in Serbia , on an old, left branch of the Danube . It is considered the oldest Serbian Orthodox monastery in the Batschka .
Legend has it that the monastery of Sava of Serbia was founded in the 13th century, in the place where his brother, King Stefan , is said to have made peace with the Hungarian King Andrew . The earliest monastery church is said to have been destroyed, today's monastery church was built in the 15th or 16th century in the style of the later Morava school . The renovation of the monastery in 1705–1707 in the baroque style is certain .
The monastery soon became one of the richest Serbian Orthodox monasteries north of the Serbian part of the Danube. Today there is a church rehabilitation center for drug addicts in the monastery complex.
