The Monastery of La Charmoye (Charmeia) is a former Cistercian abbey in the commune of Montmort-Lucy in the Marne department , Grand Est region , in France . It is located around 18 kilometers south-east of Épernay in the Charmoye Forest (Forêt de la Charmoye).
history
The monastery was founded in 1167 by Count Heinrich I of Champagne and was occupied by monks from the Vauclair monastery . This made it a subsidiary of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . The monastery later fell into the future . The church was renewed until 1636. Around 1750 there were only five monks left. A new abbot's house was built between 1740 and 1760. In 1790 the buildings were sold. The church and cloister were still preserved; the church was demolished in the 19th century. The altar was placed in the Notre-Dame church in Épernay.
Buildings and plant
In addition to the abbot's house, a dovecote and various agricultural buildings belonging to the abbey have been preserved in the area.
