The monastery La Merci-Dieu (Misericordia Dei) - not to be confused with the existing Trappist Abbey of Notre-Dame de la Merci-Dieu in Saint-Jean-d'Assé - is a former Cistercian abbey in the commune of La Roche-Posay in the Vienne department , Nouvelle-Aquitaine region , in France , around 28 km east of Chatellerault , on the banks of the Gartempe River .

history

The monastery, initially called Bécheron, was founded in 1151 by Eschivard, Lord of Preuilly-sur-Claise (see House Preuilly ), and around 1175 took the name La Merci-Dieu. It was a subsidiary of the Chaalis monastery from the filiation of the Pontigny primary abbey (according to other information from the Cherlieu monastery and thus a filiation of the Clairvaux monastery ). The priory of Tartifumé in Ingrandes depended on the monastery . It also had the granges Plain-Bois, Oire, Bécheron, Brene, Paire and Regne and various lands. Around 1660 the theologian Jean Bourgeois received the abbey in Kommende, which had recently become part of strict observance . During the French Revolution , the monastery came to an end in 1791.

Buildings and plant

Some rooms in a private estate, a mill, the chapel used as a barn and a cloister wing, which was renovated shortly before the end of the monastery, have been preserved . The Notre-Dame church in La Roche-Posay preserves an altar from the monastery.
