history

Abbot Vital Lehodey of the Bricquebec Monastery wanted a women's monastery near him, but it was only founded after his death. The community, which began in Blainville-sur-Mer (west of Coutances ) in 1950 under the name of Notre Dame de la Merci-Dieu ("Mercy"), moved to Saint-Jean-d'Assé (north of Le Mans ) in 1970 and in 1977 became a member of the Trappist order incorporated, but lives a religious rule of lesser severity. She entertains herself by making hand-woven liturgical vestments . The monastery should not be confused with the former monastery La Merci-Dieu in La Roche-Posay .
