The Lisle-en-Barrois monastery (Insula barrensi) is a former Cistercian abbey in the municipality of the same name in the Meuse department , Grand Est region , in France , around 17 km north of Bar-le-Duc .

history

The monastery was founded in 1140 by Ulric de Lisle and his wife Mathilde for canon regulars , who first settled in Les Anglecourts near Courcelles-sur-l'Aire. In 1150, the Cistercians from Saint-Benoît-en-Woëvre moved into the monastery, which thus belonged to the filiation of the Morimond primary abbey . In 1160 the monastery was moved to Lisle. From the end of the 12th century on, the priory with the courtyard of Les Anglecourts and the courtyards of Vaudroncourt, Lamermont, Yvraumont, les Merchines, Cheminel, Le Bois-Japin, la Barbotte and a large forest area belonged to the monastery . The number of monks was usually six to ten. In 1567 the monastery was destroyed in the Huguenot Wars , but rebuilt. It was disbanded in 1790 during the French Revolution . Most of the buildings were demolished between 1807 and 1825.

Buildings and plant

The abbot's house from 1755 and some buildings outside the complex have been preserved.
