Marienau Monastery

The Kloster Marienau in Marienau , today a district of Coppenbrügge in the district of Hamelin-Pyrmont , was a convent of Carmelite . It was also called "to deme Ouhagen" (to the Auhagen).

history

The monastery, which was consecrated to the Blessed Mother Mary , was founded probably in 1310. The first documentary mention comes from 1312. At the same place there was previously a chapel, which in 1298 received a papal letter of grace . The lands were donated by the Counts of Spiegelberg , who also used the monastery as a burial place. In 1363 the monastery church was consecrated. Around 18–20 brothers lived in the monastery, most of whom came from the near and far. The monastery belonged to the Lower German order province and was together with the Carmelite monastery in Kassel apart from the other monasteries of this province, which had its focus in the Lower Rhine area. Several times - in 1432, 1441 and 1507 - the monastery was damaged by fire or the effects of war.

Around the middle of the 14th century, Johannes von Hildesheim became a Carmelite in Marienau. After various activities throughout Europe, he died in 1375 as Prior of Marienau and was buried in the monastery church.

In the 15th century, the monastery experienced a period of decline. In the middle of the 16th century it became Lutheran with the entire principality of Calenberg . In 1543 a Lutheran visitation of the Calenberg sovereignty took place. In 1565 the prince took the monastery completely into himself and leased it. The last brothers left the convent. At the end of the 16th century the monastery was described as "a desolate monastery". In today's Marienauer Marienkapelle wall remains of the former monastery church are preserved.
