history

The Archbishop of Magdeburg , Wichmann von Seeburg , founded the St. Georg nunnery in Glaucha in 1180. Under Archbishop Albrecht of Magdeburg the monastery became Cistercian in 1220 (under the supervision of Monastery Zinna ), from then on it was called St. Marien or Marienkammer and in 1231 took over the church of St. Georgen as a monastery church. The monastery was dissolved in 1557. Today's church in Glauchaer Str. 77 dates from 1744. Only the altar is preserved from the monastery period.
