The Notre-Dame du Jau (Le jau, originally Clariana) monastery is a former Cistercian abbey in the commune of Mosset in the Pyrénées-Orientales department , Occitania region , in France . It was about 10 km northwest of Prades in the Castellane valley , near the Col de Jau pass between Têt and Aude .
history
The monastery, founded in 1147 as a Benedictine settlement, submitted to the Cistercian monastery Ardorel in 1162 and thus belonged to the filiation of the Primary Abbey of Pontigny . The monastery owned the Grangien Mas de Sainte-Marie in L'Ille-sur-Têt , Saint-Martin-de-la-Riba near Millas and two between Estagel and Cases de Pene. The convent, which probably served primarily as a hospice for travelers, was always insignificant. As early as 1230, the general chapter of the order was considering its abolition. The monastery existed until the 17th century.
Buildings and plant
Only insignificant ruins have survived from the complex.
