The Onze Lieve Vrouw Kamer ( Camera Beatae Mariae Virginis ) monastery was a Cistercian monastery near Aagtkerke in what is now the Dutch province of Zeeland .
history
The nunnery, which is also known as Maria's Kamer or Vrouwekamer , was founded in Emelisse on Noord-Beveland in 1223 on land acquired from the Cistercian Abbey of Ter Doest and was accepted into the Cistercian order in 1236 at the request of the mother monastery of Ter Doest. It thus belonged to the filiation of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . In 1274 the General Chapter of the Cistercian Order commissioned the abbots of Ter Doest and Ten Duinen to inspect the monastery. Between 1291 and 1302 the monastery was relocated to the island of Walcheren to Waterlooswerve near Aierterkerke (south of Domburg ). Presumably, the destruction caused by the storm surges of 1268 and 1288 on Noord-Beveland gave rise to this relocation. The monastery was devastated by Spanish troops between 1572 and 1574 during the Eighty Years' War .
The Kloosterweg to the south of AAGENKerke reminds of the location of the monastery . In Kamperland (Noord-Beveland), the Emelisse brewery, which opened in 1998, keeps the memory of the monastery alive.
