history

The monastery was founded in 1218 by Count Gerhard IV von Geldern . The first abbess was the mother of the founder, Richardis von Scheyern-Wittelsbach. The monastery was subject to the visitation of the abbot of the Kamp monastery on the Lower Rhine. The church was intended as a burial church for the Counts of Geldern. The church (Onze Lieve Vrouw Munsterkerk) was consecrated in 1220 and 1224 by the Archbishop of Cologne, Engelbert , a nephew of the abbess. However, indulgences for the construction were still carried out in 1244 and 1258 . High occupancy led to the establishment of the Graefental branch near Goch as early as 1258 . In 1300 the monastery had 40 nuns. Since 1543 only a nun proposed by the emperor could be elected abbess. The monastery, which was damaged in the town fire of 1665 and survived the Josephine monastery dissolution, was dissolved in 1797. The buildings later served as barracks.

investment

Only the cathedral church has been preserved from the monastery complex . The last remains of the abbey building were demolished in 1924. The church was built in three phases, with changes to the plan in each case. Significant changes took place on the occasion of the restoration by Pierre Cuypers in the years 1863 to 1890. After an earthquake, the church had to be restored again in 1992.

Furnishing

Mention should be made of the tomb of the founder Gerhard von Geldern († 1229) and his wife Margarethe von Brabant († 1231) with reclining figures of the donors in the crossing and a reredos from around 1530 with a carved shrine and painted wings.
