St. Oswald Monastery
The monastery of St. Oswald is a former convent of Benedictine in Sankt Oswald , in the municipality of St. Oswald-Riedlhütte in the diocese of Passau in Bavaria .
history
The monastery consecrated to Saint Oswald was founded in 1396 by Landgrave Johann von Leuchtenberg at a healing spring. From 1396 to 1427 it was the only Pauline monastery in Bavaria. The parish of Grafenau , which had been promoted to town 20 years earlier, was bequeathed to him as an economic basis. Disputes and hussar attacks led to the retreat of the Paulines. In 1431 Pope Eugene IV transferred the monastery to the Augustinian Canons . The canons settled it from the St. Nikola Monastery in Passau and Suben .
After the death of the last provost Wolfgang Heigl in 1563, the monastery stood empty. At the request of Duke Albrecht V of Bavaria , the abbot of the sent Benedictine - monastery Niederaltaich 1567 monks in the monastery. In 1803 it was dissolved in the course of secularization .
The monastery served as a parish church and parish hall since 1817. In 1876 the facility burned down. The present church was rebuilt by 1882. The Klosterbräu inn still exists on the site of the former monastery .
Even today the historic Garn Saturday takes place in St. Oswald with a solemn pilgrimage service and a market in front of the church.
