The Monastery of Santa María de Alaón ( Catalan Santa Maria de Alaó) is a former Benedictine monastery originally founded as a Cluniac priory in Sopeira in Ribagorza , Huesca Province in Aragon ( Spain ).

history

The monastery, supposedly going back to a Visigothic foundation, was re-founded at the turn of the 11th to the 12th century and built in the Lombard- Romanesque style in the early 12th century . In the disentailment of Government Juan Álvarez Mendizábal the monastery was closed in 1836 and then abandoned. In 1931 it was declared a Monumento Nacional ( Bien de Interés Cultural ). During the Spanish Civil War , it was partially destroyed by fire. As a result, the church was restored.

Buildings and plant

The church is built according to a basilica plan with three naves and semicircular apsides with blind arcades . It has a four-story square bell tower . The main portal bears a Christ monogram (Chrismon). The cloister goes down to the bases of some columns.
