Schweinheim Monastery

The Schweinheim Cistercian abbey was a monastery in Schweinheim near Euskirchen in the Archdiocese of Cologne from 1238 to 1802 .

history

In 1238, a Count von Tomburg donated the Cistercian convent Porta Coeli ("Gate of Heaven") intended for the daughters of the wealthy landed gentry as a burial place for his family , which was under the spiritual direction of Heisterbach Monastery . After being destroyed at the beginning of the 18th century, the monastery was rebuilt from 1726 to 1728, but closed in 1802 due to the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss (like all monasteries) and fell into disrepair. The church was torn down. Today there is a seminar house in the remaining buildings.

The last abbess

The bourgeois Maria Benedicta Lagrange (* 1741 in Prüm , † 1833 in Arloff ) made her solemn profession in 1765 , was then master of the menu for 14 years and finally the last abbess of the monastery.
