The Sellières monastery (lat .: Sigillerium; Scellières) is a former Cistercian abbey in the municipality of Romilly-sur-Seine in the Aube department , Grand Est region , in France , around 43 km northwest of Troyes , on an arm of the Seine .
history
The monastery was founded in 1168 by Hugues I, Lord of Romilly, and was settled by the Jouy Monastery , with which it belonged to the affiliation of the Pontigny Monastery . The monastery never had more than ten monks. In the 17th century the monastery was set on fire, but then rebuilt. In the Huguenot Wars the church was damaged and lost its pointed barrel vault. During the French Revolution , the monastery came to an end in 1791 and the complex was then sold. The philosopher Voltaire was buried in Sellières in 1778 , but his body was transferred to the Panthéon in 1791 .
Buildings and plant
The facility was heavily rebuilt in the 19th century. In the place of the monastery there is a small castle.
