Solnhofen Monastery
The monastery Solnhofen is a former convent of Benedictine in Solnhofen in Bavaria in the diocese of Eichstaett .
history
The monastery dedicated to St. Salvator, St. Mary and St. John the Baptist, was founded after 794 by the Benedictine Abbey of Fulda . Before that, Saint Sola had been active there in pastoral care since 750 and received the goods entrusted to him by Fulda in 793 as a gift from Charlemagne . In his will, the year of his death in 794, he again bequeathed the donation to Fulda. The monastery was closed in 1534 after the provost of the monastery had converted to Protestantism the year before .
At the site of the Solnhofen Monastery there have been evidence of various church buildings for around 650 years, most recently a three-aisled basilica until it was partially demolished in 1783. The restored remains of the so-called Sola basilica are among the oldest architectural monuments in Germany; they are located immediately north of today's parish church .
