The Sotos Albos Monastery (Santa María de la Sierra; Saltus Albi) is a former Cistercian abbey in Sotosalbos near Collado Hermoso around 18 km northwest of Segovia in the province of Segovia in Castile-León in Spain .

history

The monastery, a Benedictine foundation from 1126 (or 1133) , initiated by the Bishop of Segovia, Pedro de Agén, joined the Cistercian order in 1212 as a daughter monastery of Cîteaux . The monastery was converted into a priory of the Sacramenia Monastery as early as 1498 , but continued as such until around 1835. The ruinous facility is now used for beekeeping.

The ruin has been classified as a Monumento Nacional ( Bien de Interés Cultural ) since 1931 .

architecture

The complex, which already has pronounced Gothic features, has been preserved in a ruinous condition. The church, whose roof is missing, has three aisles with five bays and pointed arches , but without a crossing, with a monumental facade with a pointed portal and a now empty rose window and two small oculi on the sides. The first yokes have animal capitals in the Romanesque tradition. The use of quarry stone masonry is striking.
