The And Monastery in Krems in Lower Austria was a Capuchin monastery and place of pilgrimage to Mary during the Counter Reformation . It existed from 1614 to 1796. Today the building is used as an event center , restaurant and wine college .

history

After Emperor Matthias allowed the Capuchins to build a monastery between Krems and Stein in 1612 , they began construction in 1614 based on plans by Mathias Piazolli .

The building in front of the south wing and east of the monastery gate with a vestibule on two pillars was donated in 1638 as a chapel for a Mother of God brought from Prague , but not implemented for the time being. In 1643 there were three miraculous healings around the figure of Mary and the healing water flowing there. The Archduke Leopold Wilhelm , Bishop of Passau, submitted an application for permission to build the chapel in And, for 14,000 guilders were required. Leopold Wilhelm commissioned court stonemason master Pietro Maino Maderno to build the chapel of grace in the Capuchin monastery and near Krems according to Piazoll's plan. The Krems pastor Werner Haldenfeld carried out the transfer of the statue of Our Lady from the monastery wall, where it had been kept since 1614, to the new chapel.

A fire on April 30, 1656 burned the monastery church and the convent building. After reconstruction by Domenico Sciassia and consecration on September 7, 1659 by the canon of Olomouc, Auxiliary Bishop Johann Geiger, the statue of Our Lady was transferred from the small chapel to the newly built church the next day, the nave of which adjoins the chapel.

In 1796 the monastery was closed. The large black marble altar was moved to the parish church of St. Veit in Krems and is built as a side altar in the left transept. It reminds of the alleged healing spring Maria Bründl (Marienbrunnen).

After a renovation in the 1980s, the building is now used as an event center and restaurant.

Place name

The name is likely to be derived from the Latin Sancta Maria ad undas (St. Maria on the waves), which alludes to the location of the monastery near the Danube (before the Danube regulation ). On site, the name Und is often jokingly explained by the fact that the monastery is located between Krems and Stein.

And still today forms a census district of the city of Krems (counting districts 010 and 011), comprises around 260 buildings and 2,100 inhabitants. The counting district is located in the Krems an der Donau district, with individual houses in the Landersdorf district .
