The Vérteskeresztúr Monastery (Sancta Crux; Vértesszentkereszt; Szentkereszt; Vertheskerestur) is a former Cistercian abbey in Hungary . It was in the Shield Mountains (Vértes) between Oroszlány and Pusztavám northwest of the city of Székesfehérvár .
history
The monastery, which was probably inhabited by Benedictines as early as 1146 , was founded by the Csák family in 1214 as a subsidiary of Igriș Monastery as a Cistercian monastery and belonged to the filiation of the Pontigny primary abbey . It passed back to the Benedictine order in the 14th century or even earlier and was taken over by the Dominicans of Székesfehérvár (Stuhlweissenburg) in 1478 . It was abandoned during the Turkish occupation.
Buildings and plant
The west portal and parts of the three-nave church, especially the cloverleaf-shaped apse , have been preserved from the Romanesque building . The also partially preserved enclosure is to the left of the church. The original two-tower, three-aisled church was restored in 2008. Much of the old, artistically hewn stone material can be seen in the Kuny Domokos Megyei Múzeum in Tata and the art ruins.

Remarks
