The Valence (Valentia) Monastery is a former Cistercian abbey in the commune of Valence-en-Poitou in the Vienne department , Nouvelle-Aquitaine region , in France . The monastery is about 36 kilometers south of Poitiers .

history

The monastery was founded in 1225 or 1230 by Count Hugo X of Lusignan . It is unclear whether it was a subsidiary of Pontigny Monastery (like Peugniez) or Clairvaux Monastery (like Certosa di Firenze). The monastery was destroyed in the Wars of Religion of the 16th century, but rebuilt, and disbanded during the French Revolution in 1791.

Remains of the chapel, the guest wing and part of the 20 m long and 10 m wide two-aisled refectory with groined vaults supported by three cylindrical columns from the 13th century have been preserved.

In 1935 the complex was declared a monument historique . The gatehouse with two gates, the bridge and the abbot's house from the 17th century are protected.
