The Valroy Monastery (Val-le-Roi; Vallis Regis) is a former Cistercian abbey in the commune of Saint-Quentin-le-Petit in the Ardennes department , Grand Est region , in France . It was about 26 km northwest of Rethel and 41 km north of Reims near today's La Bouverie in the valley of the Barres stream between Saint-Quentin-le-Petit and Sévigny.
history
The monastery was founded in 1147 by Hugues I de Roucy and his wife Richildis von Hohenstaufen, a daughter of Emperor Frederick I , and occupied by monks from Igny Monastery . It thus belonged to the filiation of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . It owned several agricultural properties in the area, including La Grange-aux-Bois in Sévigny, Montigny in Nizy, La Croix in Le Thour, Écoret in Chivres, Les Mortiers in Wagnon and Herbay in Signy-le-Petit. The monastery flourished until the 16th century in Coming fell. The number of monks then fell to nine in 1768. During the French Revolution , the monastery was closed, sold and then demolished. The location and floor plan of the monastery were only discovered again after the First World War .
