The Monastery of Xunqueira de Espadañedo (Juncaria; Junquera or Santa María de Xunqueira de Espadañedo) is a former Cistercian abbey in the province of Ourense in Galicia in Spain . It is located in the municipality of Xunqueira de Espadañedo around 5 km north of Maceda in the Comarca Allariz , around 28 km east of Ourense (Orense) and should not be confused with the nearby Augustinian monastery of Xunqueira de Ambía.
history
The monastery was founded as an Augustinian convent in 1150 and passed to the Cistercian order in 1170. This probably explains the location on the slope, which is unusual for a Cistercian monastery. The mother monastery was the nearby Montederramo monastery from the filiation of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . The importance of the monastery always lagged behind that of Montederramo. In 1546 the monastery joined the Castilian Cistercian congregation. The abolition of the monastery by the Mendizábal government in 1835 brought the end of the monastery, which fell to the municipality. In 1981 the church was declared a monument.
Buildings and plant
The Romanesque, transeptless church has three aisles and three semicircular apses . The facade no longer shows any medieval elements, but has a tower. From the enclosure to the right (south) of the church, the two-story north and west wings from the 16th century have been preserved, while only small remains of the other two wings remain. A sundial is from 1663.
